Shields: Not just for Medieval Knights anymore!

Basic Shielding

Shielding, in psionic terms, is an energetic force that surrounds the energy workers body. Truly though, it can be made to shield other things as well. The shape of a shield can be absolutely anything, though most shields end up being roundish in nature. There are many reasons one could need to utilize a shield. For protection against energetic attacks, they are the most quickly thought-of defense. People who fancy themselves naturally empathic or telepathic often feel that they need to keep a shield up most of the times, with the theory that if they do not they are likely to get overloaded with emotions or thoughts. As you increase your training in psionics, and are exposed to other psychic phenomenon, you may find the use of a shield to be essential. It is generally agreed that shields are incredibly useful. Most psions will recommend having at least one up most of the time.

Most everybody has some sort of natural 'shield' up in this manner, though it is purely subconscious. The average human has just strong enough of one to filter out the most basic of Psionic activity. However, these are not nearly enough for those who take their first steps into the world of Psionics.

Shield Construction-

A very basic type of shield is the “ Bubble Shield.” A "bubble shield" is most commonly used for hindering commonly occurring empathic and telepathic projections. Be advised though, in a larger group of people an empath or telepath might find them to be not quite strong enough. If you were to get into any sort of energy-sparring though, they would be essentially useless. However, they are good for novice energy workers, as they will stop everyday annoyances.

To the best of my knowledge, there are three main methods to create one:

Method 1- Expansion of a Psi Ball : As the name suggests, this method turns a psi-ball into a "bubble shield". You would simply create a psi ball, then proceed to grow it larger and larger until it covers your entire being.

Method 2- Visualizing : This method relies, easily enough, on visualizing. This method is the easiest to explain, considering all one has to do is 'visualize' a shield being created from wherever, and coming to surround you. Many use the visualization of a bubble, or something out of a sci-fi movie. You must truly create the shield out of your pure visualization though, so you MUST visualize it properly, making it believable.

Method 3- [Tactile] The Power Within: In this method, you feel inwards, to the energy in your body, and expand outwards. This is an excellent choice for the tactile energy worker.

Now that you've tried and made a "bubble shield", the rest are just figuring out the different programmings. The shields are made the same way, but are programmed to act in different manners.
The following is a list of a few ideas, however I greatly encourage you to be creative and think of your own shield forms.

Dense Shield- This is the shield you would see most often during a spar, or an attack. It’s relatively simple in construction. It’s usually created through the visualization of something that implies strength to the energy worker. You could use bricks, plated steel, or whatever. In essence, whatever implies strength to you, is what you should use.

Mirror Shield- This clever little shield will reflect the attacker’s energy or telepathic/empathic projects right back at them. Problem is that if you are a natural telepath or empath, and you mirror the thought or emotion right back to the person, this would merely amplify their emotions, causing even more work for your shield. To avoid this, you could use something that would instead cause the projections to reflect a different direction from which they came.

"Sticky” Shield- This shield, sometimes referred to as a "goo" shield, is used to trap an attack inside of its “goo.” It can be programmed to take the energy of an incoming construct and funnel it to the psion, or it could simply "deprogram" it and keep the energy for itself. This shield may take a while to construct, however, it is well worth it. It is useful to try this shield in conjunction with others, because then even if a construct gets through, the effects of said construct will be diminished greatly.

One last thing to note, is that it is possible, and very easy to layer shields. Usually, the more the better. There are some shields that are great to layer in certain orders. Traditionally, you would want a mirror shield to go on top, etc;
